Our Montana-based website development team is expanding our capacities. We're looking for a writer/editor to join us in our Bozeman office to expand our content creation abilities. We're interested in someone who wants to work closely with our web development and Internet marketing teams to write and edit copy for our internal and client websites, publish content on social media, develop press releases and long-form articles for publication.

Our ideal candidate has a talent for writing in different styles for our various clients' needs and is looking for long-term employment on our fast-paced team. Due to the nature of our work, experience as a professional writer, technical writer, editor, web developer, or social media and/or interactive media developer would be beneficial. Responsive Timecards for Montana Health Network

Bozeman, Montana: Our advanced web development team is collaborating with the Montana Health Network to create a time management web app for their staffing agency. Timecards will be integrated into their existing website and administrated through our custom content management system, My JTech. This new time management system is part of a complete site update which will incorporate responsive design for great performance on mobile devices as well as desktop systems.

Employees of the Montana Health Network staffing agency will be able to log into the timecard system via the Montana Health Network website system and will be presented with an interface for tracking and entering their hours for payroll. On the backend, this system is fully integrated with the rest of the Montana Health Network system and incorporates integration with their accounting system.

We enjoy working with the administrative team at the Montana Health Network and love bringing new functionality to their website!

Looking back on 2014.

2014 was a great, dramatic year for JTech. We tore down our website production process, rebuilt it from scratch, hired great people, and did great work. To paraphrase the philosopher Heraclitus: "Nothing endures but change." Such is the nature of the web development world, where the rate of innovation and technological proliferation continues at breakneck speed.

Here's one more thing to the list of what endures: constantly striving to be better, honing our cutting-edge approach to web development, perfecting our collaboration as a team and with our clients. Let's count down a few of the things that happened this year.

JTech: 2014 in Review

5. We continued our intern program with Montana State University.
JTech has formed an ongoing partnership with the MSU schools of Art and Business; each quarter, we host interns who work with our Montana web development team in design, internet marketing, and development. This year, we hosted design interns Tyler Fortune and Samantha Stokes, marketing interns Diego Campos and Kate Burgan, and development intern Zachary Lowen. They've all been wonderful additions to our team and our office.

4. We refreshed our own website and branding.
After rebuilding our website in late 2013 with responsive website design, we reworked our website to add more polish. As we continue to place more focus on content development and building resources to share with the web development community, it became apparent to us that our news and blogs deserved a dedicated section of our website. We also streamlined our branding, updating our color palette and creating a cleaner, sharper profile. The final detail in our site's update was the design of delightful animated interactions when navigating to each section.

3. We embraced responsive website design.
In late 2013, we determined that responsive website design was the future. As mobile devices continue their takeover and screen sizes are more variable than ever, it's important to create websites that work well when presented at any size.

Our wonderful clients clearly agree that responsive design is necessary: we built responsive websites for Helena dentistry practice Great Divide Dental, theatrical pyrotechnics specialist Next FX, the HRSG User's Group, the Northwest Regional Telehealth Resource Center, and Vermont-based kitchenware company J.K. Adams. These are some of the best websites we've ever made.

2. My JTech enters Early Access.
Our next-generation content management system, My JTech, is live! We planned, developed, and polished My JTech for years, and now we and select clients are using it to manage our websites. My JTech fully replaces our Control Center content management and adds huge improvements in performance and functionality. My JTech is custom-configured for each client to perfectly fit your data, is responsively designed, will now be deployed for all new projects, and soon we will begin working with each of our clients to migrate existing sites to it.

1. We added great new members to our team.
Robin Hickman, who we added to our Bozeman web development team as a junior developer in December 2013, has been a rock-solid addition to our programming capacity.

Karen Addiego, our new Account Manager, is a frighteningly capable multitasker who always gets the job done. She's the glue between our Montana web design team and our clients.

Zachary Lowen started as an intern, but we recently hired him to add more development bandwidth to our team.

In the near future, we will hire a dedicated writer/editor to bolster our writing, news, public relations and social media capacity.

Our new team members and new development process have combined to form a JTech that's more tightly-knit, collaborative, and fast-paced than ever before. Thanks for a great year!

Everyone scrolls: designing below the fold.

If you're a designer or work with designers, you're certainly familiar with the concept of designing "above the fold." This is a design philosophy that originates in newspapers, where the upper half of the front page is loaded with the most important stories and photographs, as well as the prime advertising space. Above the fold information is what's first presented to the viewer, and it has been extended as a concept from the world of newspapers and print design to the world of web design.

Everyone scrolls: designing below the fold

Even within the realm of web design, presenting all important information and navigation "above the fold" — without requiring the user to scroll —has been passed around as gospel. This dates back to the early years: when the internet was brand new to its users, many people didn't scroll at all.

Is the fold still relevant in 2014?
According to a study by Clicktale(1), 76% of visits to pages with scrollbars scrolled down. This is conclusive evidence that users do scroll — but what does that mean for our page layouts?

Most user time and attention is still spent at the top of the page: to be specific, 80% of user viewing time is still above the fold (2). User attention is at its height when visitors first arrive on the page, with a focused drive for relevant information. This gradually decreases as they quickly scan through the rest of the page, until they reach the bottom, where they focus a bit more attention (if they make it that far).

Jakob Nielsen describes this phenomenon:
"It's as if users arrive at a page with a certain amount of fuel in their tanks. As they "drive" down the page, they use up gas, and sooner or later they run dry. The amount of gas in the tank will vary, depending on each user's inherent motivation and interest in each page's specific topic. Also, the "gasoline" might evaporate or be topped up if content down the page is less or more relevant than the user expected."

Guiding the user.
The "emptying gas tank" phenomenon can be mitigated somewhat by designing a clear hierarchy and trail of information, with the top of the page used to introduce the point of the page — the product, service, or subject being explored. From this jumping off point, it's useful to introduce visual cues, which range from the subtle to the blatant.

A simple approach is to design your content that it spans the fold and appears incomplete or cut off at the bottom of the window, suggesting that there's probably more to see below. Be wary of horizontal bands of empty content that span the page — they can easily be mistaken for the page's end.

Pinterest offers "cards" of information in staggered columns, which makes it obvious that there's always more content to see if you scroll down.

Less subtle approaches involve visual connections from one element to another — arrows pointing down the page at the next stage in a process, or a visual trail that leads visitors through the story being told by the page. Most obvious of all is a big button with text: "Scroll down for more!"

Responsive design and the fold.
"Above the fold" used to be a fixed dimension — the top 600 pixels or so of a website were guaranteed to be visible to the vast majority of visitors. In today's world of phones and tablets and massive desktop monitors, there is no longer a reliable "fold" to design for. Today's screen variance — and especially the reintroduction of small screens — means that we must focus on organizing and content into logical hierarchical groups.

Using the strategies shown above — deliberately cutting off content, visual trails and scroll buttons — will all help encourage mobile users to scroll. Even if we wanted to, there simply isn't enough room to cram all the important information above the fold on mobile screens. However, there's evidence that certain content should live below the fold anyway.

What content should live below the fold?
Web landing pages focused on selling a product or service are a valuable example of how to organize content on a webpage. The traditional, conventional advice is to provide a prominent call to action above the fold: "Buy Now," "Get Started," "Get It Free," and so on.

However, in cases where building trust or persuading a potential buyer is a necessary part of the pitch, it may be better for your call-to-actions to appear lower on the page, after evidence, testimonials, or other trust-building material has been presented. If you're selling insurance or medical services, a below-the-fold call to action could be advisable. Even when building trust, however, it’s important to present the essence of your topic above the fold.

There is inarguably value in presenting important information up front. Visitors to your website immediately begin making decisions about whether you're trustworthy or offering something that they're interested in. If the first impression is positive, you can focus their attention through well-organized content that flows strongly from one section to the next.

However, visitors to your website will scroll. The more relevant and well-written the content, and the better the organization, the more they will scroll. If your website is a novel, the space above the fold can function as your book's cover and introduction — no need to try fitting the whole story on the first page. Because mobile devices have all-but-guaranteed that some of your visitors will have to scroll, it makes more sense to focus on establishing the story and getting your visitors' interest.

Choosing Website Imagery That Will Fit Your Brand

Choosing unique photos for your organization's website.

Images are critical: they're a universal language that speaks directly to the intuitive, emotional half of the brain. The images you choose to represent your organization and communicate with visitors can have a greater and more immediate effect than the text they accompany, starting with the immediate decision of whether to view the rest of your website or whether to go elsewhere. The images on your website will be the first impression visitors have of your company, determining their gut-level reaction — positive, negative, trustworthy or not. Let's take a look at what goes into effective imagery.

Be sure to convey the right emotion and subject in your visual messaging.

1. Subject and emotion.
Whether you choose to use stock photography or hire a photographer, it's important that the images convey the right message and emotion. For instance: using Montana imagery for a business based in Montana, or photos of smiling people if happiness is a key component of what you want associated with your organization. If you're positioning your organization as affordable, using a larger number of smaller images signals comparisons as on supermarket shelves. For upscale websites, fewer images are used, but they tend to be positioned strongly for maximum emotional or conceptual impact.

2. Trust.
Do the images on your website give visitors a realistic expectation of what they can expect? If you're a small business, using stock photography of a large team working together is disingenuous and can lead to broken expectations further down the line. Whether or not the photos are actually photos of your business or product, it's important that they accurately convey a sense of who and what your organization is.

3. Appropriateness.
Be sure to use photos that are suitable for your target audience. If you're a non-profit marketing to families and children, photos of sultry women would create an odd dissonance — whereas a tanning salon might find bronzed women soaking up sun to be a perfect fit.

Unique photos are an important part of standing out from your competition.

4. Uniqueness.
While stock photography can be a cost-effective way to approach imagery, it's important to use assets that are sufficiently different than your competition — including simply using different stock photos. By now, you may have seen some of the "live chat support" women with smiling faces and perfectly coiffed hair so often that they've begun to feel like old friends.

5. Good content.
Investing in getting your images right isn't good enough, sadly. If the images are not accompanied by quality content optimized for your target audience, any good impression you create will soon evaporate. Bozeman, Montana: Our Montana web design team is in the process of rebuilding Clark Film Buying's website with a clean new aesthetic and fully responsive design. As with Clark's current website, the vast majority of the functionality is hidden behind the scenes in a secure extranet that Clark uses to manage their company's operations.

Clark Film Buying is a film buying and booking service based in Bozeman, Montana. They book for more than 160 independently-owned screens in 17 states, providing advocacy and support for their clients with film companies.

With the responsive website rebuild, the extranet is being expanded to add support for Clark's clients to login and access some of the services provided by Clark. We delight in returning to previous projects to refine their usability and add polish to the interface, and we always love working with the friendly folks at Clark Film Buying.
